Carbon County’s Battle Baseball used a big sixth inning to secure a 12-9 victory over Wisconsin in the first day of pool play Sunday at the Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, New York.

Locked in a 2-2 tie entering the bottom of the fourth, Battle took a commanding lead with a five-run outburst. The advantage grew with another run in the fifth, setting the stage for a dramatic inning and a half.

Wisconsin responded by scoring six runs in the top of the six, bringing the game to a 8-8 tie. Battle immediately answered in the bottom half of the frame with four runs of their own, creating space and eventually earning the win.

Rigden Rhoten pitched a solid 3.2 innings, allowing only one hit and no earned runs. Austin Leonard worked five outs, giving up six earned runs and recording one strikeout. Jaxton Smith closed out the final 1.2 innings giving up one earned run.

Smith paced the team offensively with a three-hit effort, finishing 3-5 at the plate with a triple and two RBI. Jacen Urbanik also recorded multiple hits, going 2-4 with a double and two RBI.

Alex Martinez, Nate Tatton, Jacen Cowley and Callen Donaldson each brought in two runs in a well balanced performance.

Sunday’s game marked the first of four pool play games. Grouped in the American Division, Battle shares the pool with Wisconsin, Colorado and Texas.

Battle will look to move to 2-0 in pool play when they return to the field Monday morning against Colorado. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 9:00 am.
