Carbon’s Battle baseball suffered its first loss in pool play at the hands of Eagle Pass, Texas, on Tuesday. Texas took the lead at the top of the second, but Battle was not ready to go away, putting up a fight to the end, falling 5-4.
The Battle team was coming off a win over Colorado on Monday, and had to face undefeated Texas next, before Tuesday’s game, Carbon was undefeated as well.
Carbon did get on the board before Eagle Pass, in the bottom of the first inning, when Jace Bosone hit a single to second, scoring Jaxton Smith from third. Texas would fight back and take the lead in the top of the second, 3-1. Battle’s bats would go quiet until the bottom of the sixth when Jacen Cowley singled to third to drive in Rigdon Rhoten from third to cut the Texas lead in half.
Moving to the bottom of the seventh, with the score now 5-2, Carbon would get something going. Mason Powell would lead off with a double, then two batters later, Smith would collect a walk. Then, with two outs on the board, Bosone smashed a triple to left field, driving in both Powell and Smith to push the score to 5-4. Unfortunately, the inning would come to an end, and Carbon lost 5-4.
Smith went 2-3, earning two runs. Bosone went 2-4 with three RBIs, Rhoten was 2-4 with a run scored, and Cowley went 2-3 with an RBI in the loss.
Smith also got his start on the mound, going three innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits, while striking out three. Austin Leonard came in, going three innings as well, and surrendered a hit and struck out three. Callan Donaldson ended the contest for Carbon with one earned run on one hit.
Next up for Battle is the host team, Jamestown. They are yet to win a game in pool play, and Carbon will need to defeat them and hope that they end up in the top three in their division to advance to Thursday.
