
Carbon Battle baseball was back on the field for the final game in pool play on Wednesday, to take on the host team, Jamestown. Carbon put up big runs in the early going and maintained their lead behind defense and great pitching to take the 12-7 win and move into the single elimination bracket.
Battle’s journey in Jamestown began last Sunday when they claimed a victory over Stevens Point, Wisconsin, 12-9. The next day, they faced Centennial, Colorado, coming away with a 7-1 win. On Wednesday, Battle suffered their first loss of pool play as they were handed a 5-4 loss by Eagle Pass, Texas. In their final game of pool play, they faced the host team from Jamestown, New York.
The game was hotly contested from the beginning with both teams putting up a total of 12 runs in the first two innings.
Battle would break the 6-6 tie in the third, as Jacen Cowley singled to center to bring home Rigdon Rhoten, then with two outs, Carbon went on a bit of a run when Mason Powell sent a line drive to right, bringing Cowley in to score. Powell would advance to second and Austin Leonard would score on the throw. Nate Tatton sent a double to left in the next at bat and brought Powell in to put the Battle lead at 10-6.
Moving into the fourth Battle wasn’t done yet. With the bases loaded, Leonard would ground out to first, bringing Alex Martinez in to score. With a pair of outs, Jacen Urbanik hit a grounder, bringing Jace Bosone home to push the score to 12-6. Carbon gave up one more run to Jamestown to get the score to the final 12-7.
Jaxton Smith and Bosone both went 3-4, scoring two runs and collecting an RBI for Battle. Rhoten was 2-3 with a run and an RBI in the win.
Cowley got the start on the mound, putting in four innings of work, giving up six runs, two earned, on three hits. Bosone came in to close things out with three innings, one earned run on one hit, and striking out six.
The win puts them in the Championship Bracket as the number two seed in the American Bracket. Thursday, they will take on Broomall-Newton, Pennsylvania, at 2:30 p.m. MST. Pennsylvania finished pool play 2-2 in the National Bracket.
