
Carbon’s Battle baseball moved one step closer to the Championship game on Thursday when they defeated Broomall-Newton, Pennsylvania, 7-3. The game was quiet until the late innings, and Battle used a three-run sixth to put the game away.
Battle earned their trip to the Championship Round with a big win on Wednesday over host Jamestown to earn the No. 2 spot in the American League Bracket.
Both teams on Thursday got off to a slow start, with Carbon holding a 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when Pennsylvania tied things up at 1-1. Battle came back in the bottom of the fourth when Austin Leonard came up and grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing Jace Bosone to score. Two batters later, Mason Powell singled to bring Leonard home to get the Battle lead to 3-1.
Carbon would keep Broomall Newton at arm’s length, giving up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Battle would add three more in the bottom half of the inning.
With two outs on the board, Powell sent a double to left, driving in Jacen Cowley. After Callen Donaldson got to first on an error, Nate Tatton sent a grounder to right field, driving in Powell. Jaxton Smith drove in Donaldson to push the score to 7-3. Pennsylvania came up in the top of the seventh, going three up and three down, giving Battle the win and allowing them to advance.
Powell was electric, going 3-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored for Carbon. Tatton went 2-4 with a pair of runs and one RBI, and Bosone went 1-3 with a run scored in the win.
Rigdon Rhoten got the start on the mound, going 5.1 innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits, and striking out three. Leonard put in 1.2 innings of work, giving up one hit.
Battle advances in the Championship Round to take on Tallahassee, Florida, on Friday at 5:00 p.m.MST. Tallahassee is the No. 1 seed from the National Bracket, making it through pool play a perfect 4-0.
