The Lady Dino soccer team traveled to Nephi to take on the Juab Wasps on Friday afternoon. The contest was the final pre-season match before they face the Emery Spartans to begin region play. Behind a four-goal performance from Mailia Smith and a shutout in goal from Madi Barlow, Carbon earned the 5-0 win. Saturday, the Utah High School Activities Association released the initial rankings for girls’ soccer, and the Lady Dinos start in the No. 2 spot.
In the contest with Juab, the Lady Dinos started strong, scoring two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Carbon came out and once again took charge, finding the back of the net three more times to secure the 5-0 win.
Malia Smith collected four goals in the victory to move her season total to 27. Naomi Smith collected one. Bailey Johnson, Blythe Bradford, Kayla Jones, Kenzie Morgan, and Lydia Lancaster all collected assists for the Dinos. Barlow earned her fourth shutout behind five saves.
The Lady Dinos improve to 8-2 overall with the win, and in the initial rankings released Saturday morning, Carbon sits behind only the Ogden Tigers at No. 2. The rankings differ from the RPI that has been used in years past. MaxPreps.com compiles the rankings, and while it is still a computer-based system that considers winning percentage and strength of schedule, it employs a different methodology and updates them daily.
Carbon will head back to the pitch on Thursday, September 4, when they welcome the Emery Spartans to Price to begin Region 13 play. Gametime is set for 4:00 p.m..
