The Green River Pirate baseball team had a busy Friday and Saturday on the diamond. Friday, they traveled to Tropic to face Bryce Valley and were handed a 10-0 loss. On Saturday, they scheduled a pair of games with Altamont and Wendover splitting the two, taking a loss to Altamont and a win over Wendover to go 1-2 in the three contests.

On Friday, the Pirates were in Tropic to face the Bryce Valley Mustangs. The Pirates had no answer for Bryce Valley pitcher Rodolfo Perez, who earned the complete-game win, going five innings, allowing no hits and striking out 10 in the Mustangs’ 10-0 victory over the Pirates. Jesus Escalante was on the mound for the Pirates, going four innings, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits.

On Saturday, the Pirates had a doubleheader of a different kind scheduled, playing two games against two different teams. First up was a contest against Altamont. This was the third time the two teams had met, with the Longhorns winning the first two, and on Saturday, Altamont claimed its third straight victory, 7-2.

Altamont came out putting a pair of runs on the board in the first inning, and the Pirates were quiet at the plate until the fifth inning when David Mendez drew a walk, bringing home Jason Hernandez to get the Pirates on the board and put the score at 3-1. The Pirates earned another run in the bottom of the seventh when Hernandez hit a single to center, driving in Cooper Meadows, bringing the score to 7-2, but Altamont closed out the Pirates and took the victory.

Cristian Mendoza went 3-5 for the Pirates. Anguiano was 1-4 and Hernandez was 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI in the loss.

Anguiano got started on the mound, going five innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits, striking out three. Mendoza went .1 innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits, and  Mendez closed things out, putting in 1.2 innings of work with a pair of hits and striking out one.

In their second game on Saturday, the Pirates faced the Wendover Wildcats. Green River came out firing and wanted to start their weekend quickly, dispatching Wendover 18-1 in four innings.

The Pirates wasted no time putting up eight runs in the second inning. With the score at 5-0, Gabriel Quintana sent a pop fly to third, reaching on an error, as Jesus Escalante and Medoza would both score to push the score to 7-0. Wendover added a run at the top of the third, but in the bottom of the third, Green River would erupt for 10 runs to close out the Wildcats in four innings, taking the 18-1 victory.

Hernandez went 3-3 with three runs and three RBIs for Green River. Quintana was 2-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Skyler Davis went 2-3 with three runs and a pair of RBIs in the rout.

Hernandez got the complete game on the mound, giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out six.

The Pirates head back to the field on Wednesday when they welcome Valley.
