Each year, the United Way of Eastern Utah takes a community-wide approach to beautification through its Day of Caring. Taking place on Saturday, Sept. 6, the event sees volunteers taking on projects both big and small as they work to improve our area.

UWEU Executive Director Pam Boyd joined the KOAL newsroom to preview the day and give a look at the meaning behind the event.

“The day of Caring is a great day that people can just come out and support their community in big ways and small ways and just Spruce things up,” expressed Boyd. “It is a combination of public spaces where we go downtown and we pull weeds, sweep up trash and we do things at parks and we do things just around town. We also do private spaces, people apply to us and they say, ‘We just need some help getting our yard fixed up,’ and we help them out with that.”

This year, the Day of Caring features several dumpsters available to the public to drop off any unwanted refuse. “Free dumpsters will be set up at the Price River Trailhead, located on South Carbon across from the new Maverick fuel station, and at the Price City Hall/Museum parking lot, accessed off 100 North behind the Price Fire Station.”

The event kicks off at 7 a.m. in Lin’s parking lot with a breakfast rally, followed by division into groups to tackle projects across the area. “We’ll feed you some doughnuts and bagels, and then we’ll send you off to do some work for the morning,” said Boyd.

Boyd also discussed what her favorite part of the day is,” I enjoy going to that breakfast and just seeing this swarm of people who are dedicating their Saturday to helping others. I enjoy talking to people on their private property. They’re usually overwhelmed because you know they sign up to get some help, and they’re thinking a couple of people show up, and you know, 20 kids from the college show up, and just the impact four hours on a Saturday can have.”

“Day of Caring is a beloved community effort, and we are excited to get to work Sept. 6. Residents are welcome to take part as we work to spruce up the communities we call home,” Boyd said in a release from the UWEU.
