As the first quarter of the school year progresses, students have begun to settle into their new routines. At Helper Middle School, a guiding force that assists students is the Student Council.

To share their perspective on the new year at HMS, eighth grade President Kyle Nelson, eighth grade Vice President Brooklyn Davis, seventh grade Historian Kaelee Nelson and seventh grade Secretary Raychel Riche joined the KOAL newsroom for this week’s school district update.

Starting with Davis, the vice president discussed the school’s plans for Constitution Day, which arrives on Sept. 17.” We’re going to be making posters to put around the school.” Davis also spoke on what the most challenging part of the transition from seventh grade to eighth grade has been,” It’s been hard to switch from all of the easy things in seventh grade to the more challenging stuff in eighth grade.”

Switching to the seventh grade perspective with Riche, the secretary shared information on the school’s upcoming food drive for the Helper Pantry and why it’s important to give back to the community, stating,” Because it helps local families be able to have food.”

She also spoke on what excites her most heading into the rest of the school year,” I’m looking forward to sports and upcoming dances and stuff like that.”

Continuing on the theme of dances, Kaelee Nelson took the mic and explained what she aims to accomplish when planning dances: “Probably just seeing all the others just enjoying themselves.”

The Historian also shared the most challenging part of the school year thus far: “I think it’s the teachers, because I’m so used to the other ones more because I’ve been with them for like a year.”

Rounding out the quartet of Student Council members was Kyle Nelson, who provided the athletic perspective on the year.” Things are going all right,” said the President,” We haven’t won a game yet.”

To help boost team morale, the school will be hosting a spirit week beginning on Monday, Sept. 22. According to Kyle Nelson, who is in charge of planning,” It’s looking pretty good.” He also shared his favorite activity planned for the week,” I’m looking forward to Wednesday, where we’re doing our ‘Color by Grade.’

In his role as President, Kyle Nelson takes on a leadership role for the underclassmen of the school. He shared what it’s like trying to help these students navigate the start of their middle school journey: “It’s pretty hard. Sometimes they don’t listen, but sometimes they cooperate with us.”
