The initial RPI for 3A football was released on Monday, and the Carbon Dinos are in the No. 10 spot. The RPI is a formula that the Utah High School Activities Association uses to rank teams in every classification. The number is updated at the end of every game, and then at the end of the season, it will be used to rank teams for play in the State Championships.
Cedar is the No. 1 team in 3A, followed by Morgan at No. 2, and then Manti. Richfield and Juab make up the top five.
The Dinos will face three of the top five teams in the classification to close out the regular season, starting this Friday with Juab. They will welcome the No. 2 Manti Templars to the field at Carbon High on October 10th and then close out the season on the road to face No. 1 Cedar on October 16th.
The formula used to create each team’s RPI number is as follows:
MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponents (Note: this is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents).
OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage: The same process as OWP, except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
Pregame coverage for the contest with No. 5 Juab begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Landon’s Diesel Service Pregame show, followed by kickoff at 7 p.m. Live coverage of the game is hosted on KRPX 95.3 the Peak, in addition to a video stream on Castle Country Radio-Carbon on YouTube.
