The initial RPI for 2A football was released on Monday, and the Emery Spartans are in the No. 5 spot. The RPI is a formula that the Utah High School Activities Association uses to rank teams in every classification. The number is updated at the end of every game, and then at the end of the season, it will be used to rank teams for play in the State Championships.
Last year’s State Champion, San Juan, holds on to the top spot in the rankings, with South Sevier at No. 2. South Summit, Summit Academy, and the Spartans round out the top five.
Emery will face the No. 9 team from 3A, the Canyon View Falcons, at home on Friday. They also face the top two teams before the end of the regular season in back-to-back weeks, starting on October 3rd when they welcome South Sevier to Castle Dale. The following week, they will make the long trip to face the San Juan Broncos in a rematch of last year’s state title game on October 9th.
The formula used to create each team’s RPI number is as follows:
MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the total number of available points from games played, accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponents (Note: this is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents).
OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage: The same process as OWP, except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
Pregame coverage for the contest with Canyon View begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Landon’s Diesel Service Pregame show, followed by kickoff at 7 p.m. Live coverage of the game is hosted on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM, with a video stream available on YouTube at Castle Country Radio – Emery.
