
The Green River Pirates baseball team welcomed the Piute Thunderbirds to town on Friday. The Pirates were coming off a 10-0 loss to Wayne last Wednesday and were hoping to get back on track against Piute. The Thunderbirds took charge early and didn’t look back, closing out Green River in five innings, 11-0.
With the back-to-back losses, Green River slips to 2-13 overall and 1-9 in region play, sitting at the No. 14 spot in the latest rankings.
Piute jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Moving into the third inning, the Thunderbirds went on to add another six runs. The Pirates couldn’t get past the defense of Piute as well as Brodee Montague on the mound, who earned the complete game shutout, giving up just one hit while striking out nine. Piute added two more in the fifth to close out the Pirates 11-0.
Cristian Mendoza collected the only hit for Green River, going 1-2 in the contest.
Jason Hernandez got the start on the bump, working two innings, giving up three hits and three earned runs while striking out one. Rolando Anguiano came in and gave up six runs, two earned, on three hits, and Mendoza closed out the game, going 2.2 innings and surrendered three hits, two earned runs, and struck out one.
The Pirates will be back home on Wednesday to take on Bryce Valley.
