Excitement was in the air on Friday, Sept. 26, as the Carbon Dinos took the field for a homecoming showdown against the North Sanpete Hawks. It was a tale of two halves for the Dinos, as North Sanpete took control in the second half and didn’t look back as they cruised to a 45-10 win.
The Hawks struck first, with senior quarterback Maddox Madsen delivering an 18-yard dime to Chaetton Osborne for an early North Sanpete score. A converted point after elevated the Hawks to an early 7-0 lead.
Carbon returned fire by way of a 30-yard field goal by junior Tayger Timothy to set up a 7-3 showdown at the end of one.
Both teams were held silent until the final five minutes of the second frame. Again, it was North Sanpete kicking things off, scoring first on a 15-yard run by Ayden Akee to increase the Hawk advantage to 14-3. North Sanpete also struck on special teams, with Seth Burningham swiping a punt from right beneath the Dinos’ noses, sprinting along the sideline for a 45-yard score.
Carbon struck back in the waning moments of the first half, with junior quarterback Kayden Dunn connecting with Timothy on a 12-yard strike to cut into the deficit. As both teams entered the locker room for the midway break, North Sanpete led 21-10.
The Hawks dominated the second half. After stalling near the 30-yard line, North Sanpete forced a fumble, scoring on a four-yard QB sneak moments later. The Hawks’ defense forced a three-and-out from the Dinos, setting up near midfield and again finding the promised land. Rounding out the dominant display, North Sanpete forced a fumble at the one-yard line; capitalizing on the opportunity one play later by way of an Evan Burningham run. Entering the final frame, the Hawks held a 42-10 advantage.
North Sanpete scored once more to end the contest, with kicker Rafeal Contreras booting the ball 40 yards through the uprights to claim a 45-10 lead, a margin that held until the final whistle.
The loss sets Carbon’s record at 2-5 overall and 0-4 in region play. Looking ahead, the Dinos face one final non-region opener as they make the trip to central Utah to face the Delta Rabbits (0-6, 0-2)
