On Friday, Sept. 29, Hikers exploring Goblin Valley State Park’s Little Wildhorse Canyon fell victim to an unexpected flash flood, causing several groups to be trapped by the waters and searching for higher ground.
First responders from the Emery County Sheriff’s Department, alongside park rangers, quickly responded, rescuing six people, but searching for an additional four who were still missing.
“Assistance from Emery County Search and Rescue was requested along with DNR (Department of Natural Resources) Law Enforcement and search efforts were started,” reads a social media post from Goblin Valley officials. “Luckily, all parties were able to hike out safely just after dark.”
Closing the post, park officials took the time to remind hikers of the dangers that come along with exploring slot canyons,” This was a scary time for everyone involved and a good reminder of the power of nature and risk involved in slot canyons!”
