It was a rematch of the 2024 state championship on Thursday, Oct. 9, as the Emery Spartans made the trip to Blanding to face the San Juan Broncos. The Broncos played a near-perfect game of football, building a 59-7 halftime advantage and extending the lead to 65-14 by the final whistle for a statement victory.

San Juan wasted no time getting the scoring started, taking only two plays before sophomore quarterback Beau Yeomans delivered a 26-yard pass downfield to Tripp Palmer for an early Bronco score. Two minutes later, San Juan struck by land, with a 26-yard rush from senior back Jagger Nieves. A pair of successful two-point conversions built an early 16-0 edge for San Juan.

The Broncos poured five more touchdowns on the Spartans, an offensive explosion that was stopped only by a prolonged drive by Emery. To cap off the attack, Spartan quarterback Trygg Jensen rolled right and delivered a nine-yard dime to Garrett Conover in the back of the end zone. A successful point after by senior kicker Jadin Atwood created a score of 40-7 at the end of one.

San Juan continued its dominance in quarter two, adding four touchdowns to their advantage as they built a 59-7 advantage as both teams headed into the locker room for the halftime break.

With a running clock in effect throughout the second half, both teams struggled to score in the third quarter, keeping the score at a steady 59-7 heading into the final frame.

Each team struck once more in the fourth quarter, with San Juan drawing first blood on a 15-yard pass from Kreed Herring to Randall Black.

It would only take one play for the Spartans to respond, as Jensen connected with Beau Stilson on a 73-yard downfield strike to cut into the score. Another successful Atwood PAT made it a 65-14 ballgame, a score which held until the final whistle.

The loss moves the Spartans to 2-6 on the year and 1-2 in region play. One more contest remains in the regular season for the Spartans, as they return home on Friday, Oct. 17, for a senior night showdown against the Delta Rabbits (1-6, 0-2).

Pregame coverage for the contest begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Landon’s Diesel Service Pregame show, followed by kickoff at 7 p.m. Live coverage of the game is hosted on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM, with a video stream available on YouTube at Castle Country Radio – Emery.
