Utah State University Eastern’s standout saddle bronc rider Byron Christiansen has earned an invitation to compete at the National Collegiate Champion Shootout, held during the Trinity Valley Exposition Fair and Rodeo in Liberty, Texas. Christiansen will nod his head on Friday, October 17, representing USU Eastern among the top collegiate rodeo athletes in the nation.

The Trinity Valley Fair and Rodeo’s Collegiate Shootout is one of the most prestigious events in college rodeo. The invitational brings together the top two competitors from each NIRA (National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association) region in every event, making it a true showcase of the best student-athletes across the country. With more than $100,000 in prize money on the line, contestants compete in a high-stakes format that mirrors professional rodeos with preliminary rounds narrowing the field to the top eight, who then advance to the clean-slate Shootout Round to battle for the championship title.

Earning a spot at this level is no small feat. Invitations are extended only to those who have consistently proven themselves throughout the college rodeo season. Christiansen’s strong performances across the Rocky Mountain Region, including multiple round wins and top-average finishes, secured him a place among the nation’s elite saddle bronc riders.

“This is an incredible opportunity for Byron,” said USU Eastern rodeo coach Brady Ramone. “He’s worked hard all year and earned his place at a national-level competition. It’s great to see him recognized among the best in college rodeo.”

Christiansen won’t be the only representative from the Rocky Mountain Region making the trip to Texas. Brian Evans from Southern Utah University will also compete in the saddle bronc riding, while Justise Jones and McKenzie Crockett from Colorado Mesa University will represent the region in goat tying, with Jones also competing in breakaway roping.

Competing in the Trinity Valley Shootout not only highlights Christiansen’s skill and dedication but also puts USU Eastern and the entire Rocky Mountain Region on the national stage. As he prepares to ride in Liberty, Texas, on October 17, the rodeo community will be cheering him on.
