Utah State University Eastern welcomed alumni, community partners, campus leaders and supporters on Oct. 30 for its annual Legacy Dinner. This event celebrates individuals whose achievements, leadership and service have made a meaningful difference for the university and the region.

The evening began with a reception hosted in the Library and Learning Commons, featuring displays that highlight the history and accomplishments of the campus. Attendees mingled while exploring exhibits showcasing programs, collections and memorabilia that reflect the rich legacy of USU Eastern. Following the reception, guests moved to the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center for the remainder of the program.

During the evening, four awards were presented to recognize individuals whose efforts have strengthened USU Eastern and its surrounding community.

Outstanding Alumni Award: Kelton Wells

Kelton Wells received the Outstanding Alumni Award, honoring a graduate who demonstrates professional excellence, integrity and innovation while advancing the mission and reputation of the university.

A 2009 summa cum laude graduate of the College of Eastern Utah, Wells is an Emmy-winning journalist and executive producer of public affairs programming at PBS Utah. He oversees programs including Utah Insight, The Hinckley Report, and The Governor’s Monthly News Conference. He helped launch Roots, Race & Culture, highlighting diverse voices in the state. Through his journalism and public service, Wells continues to inspire audiences and set a standard of excellence among the alumni.

Upon Their Shoulders Award: Greg Benson

Greg Benson was honored with the Upon Their Shoulders Award for his decades of exceptional leadership, service and care for this campus community.

Benson joined the College of Eastern Utah in 1999 as a music faculty member, conductor of the college and community wind symphony, dean of arts and sciences, and vice chancellor for academic affairs and student services. He guided faculty through CEU’s merger with Utah State University, ensuring a smooth transition. Benson also served as the assistant commissioner for academic and student affairs for the Utah System of Higher Education until he retired in 2020, leaving a lasting legacy of mentorship and institutional leadership.

Community Service Award: Gina Gagon

Gina Gagon was recognized with the Community Service Award for her leadership, advocacy and lasting contributions to both her community and USU Eastern.

A University of Utah graduate with an MBA, Gagon co-founded Gagon Family Medicine and serves as its vice president and CFO. She has chaired regional planning and economic councils, served on local nonprofit boards, and has been on the Utah State University Board of Trustees since 2017. Gagon serves on the USU Foundation Board and helped establish the Elevate Eastern Endowed Scholarship, raising over $500,000 for students. Her tireless service and dedication exemplify how one individual can connect community, education and opportunity.

Giving Heart Award: Frank Peczuh Jr.

Frank Peczuh Jr. received the Giving Heart Award for his generosity, selfless devotion and long-term impact on the campus and community.

A lifelong resident of Price, Utah, Peczuh began working in his family’s business at a young age and rose to president and CEO of Peczuh Printing & Paperbox. In 2023, he was inducted into the Printing Industry Hall of Fame. Peczuh volunteered for over 40 years with the Price City Fire Department, coached youth sports, served in church and civic roles and is a member on USU Board of Trustees. His career and service have left this community positively impacted and inspired.

Utah State University Interim President Al Smith attended the dinner and spoke in honor of the campus, community and this year’s honorees. The evening was emceed by Kristian Olsen, vice president of statewide residential campuses. Additional remarks were shared by:

  • Price Mayor Michael Kourianos.
  • Matthew White, vice president of USU Advancement and president of the USU Foundation.
  • Ken White, senior vice president of Statewide Enterprise.

Each speaker highlighted the accomplishments of USU Eastern and celebrated the contributions of the honorees.

Reflecting on the significance of the evening, Interim President Smith said: “What makes tonight special is not just this gathering, but what it represents: a shared belief in the power of higher education to open doors, expand horizons, and strengthen communities. Each of you, through your generosity and support, makes that possible.”

His remarks highlighted the enduring impact of the honoree’s contributions and the university’s commitment to providing opportunities and support for all of Utah.
