basketball-4

The Green River Lady Pirates took to the floor for the first time in almost 1,000 days when they traveled to Moab to face the Grand Red Devils. The Pirates struggled to find their offense and fell to the Red Devils 61-14.

The last time Green River had a girls’ basketball team was the 2022-2023 season; that year, the team went 9-18 overall with a 4-4 mark in region play. They played their last game, a loss in the State Championships to Bryce Valley on March 2, 2023.  This season, they have an eight-player roster and are ready to compete.

The Red Devils came out in the first quarter and held the Lady Pirates to three points as Grand took a 16-3 lead after one. Grand would nearly double up on Green River, going up 31-7 by halftime.

The third quarter was all Grand, as they added another 20 points to their total and held Green River scoreless, going up 51-7. The fourth quarter was a forgone conclusion as the Red Devils slowed things down, adding 10 points to their total, while Green River scored seven and Grand took the 61-14 win.

Haylie Nelson scored six for the Lady Pirates. Quianna Quintana had four, Kenley Dinkins added three, and Mattie Meadows scored one in the loss.

The Lady Pirates will be back on the floor on Thursday when they travel to Tintic to take on the Miners.
