Lady Spartan basketball traveled to Roosevelt to compete in the Battle in the Basin, hosted by Union High School. Facing teams from around the state, Emery would finish the weekend 2-1 overall, kicking off the 2025-2026 season.

In the opening contest of the weekend, the Lady Spartans face off with the defending state champions in a rematch of the championship game, the Canyon View Falcons. Using big first and third quarters, the Spartans were able to collect their first win in commanding fashion, 53-26.

Emery jumped out in the first quarter to take a 14-8 lead. Things would slow down a bit in the second quarter, with both teams scoring six points apiece, as the Lady Spartans took a 20-14 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Emery went on a tear, outscoring the Falcons 17-7 in the third and then again in the fourth. The Lady Spartans solidified their win, putting up 16 in the fourth while allowing just 5 points to the defending champs, taking a 53-26 win.

Aleeyah Cowley led the way for Emery, scoring 18 and grabbing eight boards. Addie Hurst had 11 points with four assists and three rebounds. Kabree Gordon scored 10 with eight rebounds, and Skylee Guymon had six rebounds in the win.

Up next for Emery was a meeting with 2A Duchesne. The Eagles are always right at the top of the rankings, so this could have turned into a tough contest. The Lady Spartans used a big 22-point third to take the lead for good, claiming the 53-17 win.

The Spartans would keep the Eaglers at arm’s length throughout the first half, outscoring them 13-5 in the first quarter and actually getting outscored in the second 6-5, but Emery still went to the locker room holding an 18-11 lead.

Emery would blow things open in the third, putting the game out of reach with 22 points in the quarter and carrying a 40-18 lead into the final eight minutes. The Eagles would attempt a rally, but it would fall short, and Emery would close out Duchesne 53-27.

Hurst scored 15 for the Lady Spartans, grabbing three boards. Cowley came up big once again with 14 and eight, Gordaon added nine points and four boards, and Guymon pulled down five rebounds.

In the final game of the weekend, Emery faced the North Summit Braves. Last season, the Braves lost in the 2A State championship game and were a formidable opponent for Emery, handing them their only loss of the weekend, 56-46.

The Braves came out in the first, outscoring the Spartans 12-7. The second quarter was a battle, with each team going back and forth, as the Spartans outscored North Summit 18-16 and cut into the Braves’ lead, going into the lockers with the 28-25 lead.

After fighting at the end of the first half, the Lady Spartans gave it all back as they were outscored 16-1 in the third. Emery bounced back in the fourth to cut into the  North Summit lead, but the Braves held the 56-46 advantage as time ran out.

Gordan added 15 for Emery, while Hurst had 13, and Mikayla Truman had six in the loss.

The Lady Spartans will take their 2-1 record on the road on Tuesday when they travel to Beaver.
