Returning to the hardwood following the Thanksgiving break, the Carbon Dinos took to the road for a trip to Kamas to face the South Summit Wildcats. Despite blanking the Wildcats in the second period, South Summit’s hot shooting overwhelmed Carbon, handing the Dinos a 72-56 loss.
South Summit was lights out in the first quarter, with seven players contributing to a 25-point outburst in the frame. Kyler Orth paced the Dinos, scoring the first five points for Carbon. At the end of one, the score stood 25-10 in favor of the Wildcats.
The second quarter marked one of the best eight-minute stretches in recent Dino basketball history, as Carbon uncorked an 18-0 run throughout the period, holding South Summit scoreless and claiming a narrow 28-25 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Unfortunately for Carbon, the shots started falling again for the Wildcats in the third, with Maddox Welch and Balke Osguthorpe connecting early and often to power South Summit to a 24-point quarter, outscoring Carbon by 10 to reclaim the lead going into the final frame 49-42.
Again in the fourth, South Summit could not miss, connecting with extreme efficiency around the perimeter. Sharp free throw shooting played into the equation as well, as the Wildcats poured in 23 points, building an insurmountable lead and claiming the victory over Carbon 72-56.
Leading the way in the scoring column for Carbon was Orth, who ended the game with 15 points. Also in double-digits were Carter Warburton with 14 and Logan Bennett with 13. Ty Mortensen played a key role on defense, totaling four blocks on the evening.
The loss marks the first of the Dinos’ season, who now hold a 2-1 record as they prepare for three games in three days at the Coach Tueller Classic in Logan.
