The Carbon boys’ basketball squad traveled to Cache Valley for the Tueller Classic in Logan. Starting on Thursday, taking on the Mountain Crest Mustangs, taking a tough loss, 58-56. On Friday, they faced the Logan Grizzles, and the Dinos earned their first win of the weekend, 63-49. Then, on Saturday, they wrapped things up by taking on Green Canyon, losing 73-30.

First up on Thursday, they faced the Mountain Crest Mustangs. Consistent scoring in the first half by the Mustangs gave them just enough distance between them and the Dinos for Mountain Crest to grab the 58-56 edge.

In the opening quarter, the Mustangs’ offense was ready, as they outscored Carbon 17-13.  In the second quarter, Mountain Crest kept pushing through, building a 36-25 lead heading into the locker room at the half.

In the second half, Carbon found its way, turning up the defense to hold the Mustangs to just nine points and cutting the lead to five, 45-40. The fourth quarter Carbon gave Mountain Crest all they had, putting up 16, but the Mustangs did just enough to maintain their lead and take the 58-56 win.

Kyler Orth led the Dinos with 15, Carter Warburton had 12, and Cash Withers scored eight in the loss.

On Friday, the Dinos faced the Logan Grizzlies. Carbon used a big third quarter to put them away and take a 63-49 win.

The first half was played pretty tightly, with Carbon holding a slight edge at the end of the opening quarter, 19-15. When the second quarter rolled around, the Dinos played the same game they did in the first, keeping their edge and lead, and both teams went into the locker room at halftime with Carbon leading, 35-26.

It was the third quarter when Carbon put the Grizzlies away for good, outscoring Logan 20-5 to take a commanding 55-31 lead into the final eight minutes.  Logan controlled the fourth, but the Dinos had built enough of a lead that they would hold on for the 63-49 win.

Warburton scored 15, Ty Mortensen had 12, and Logan Bennett scored 10 in the Carbon win.

Carbon wrapped up the weekend on Saturday, taking on the Green Canyon Wolves from North Logan. The Wolves had a huge first half, leading the Dinos 21-13 after the opening quarter. The second quarter was another big one for Green Canyon as its offense took off once again, building a 48-23 lead by halftime.

Carbon came out flat in quarter three, putting just 3 points on the scoreboard, and the Wolves added 18 more. By the fourth quarter, Green Canyon slowed its offense and coasted to a 73-30 win.

Orth scored 11 for Carbon, with Case Griffeth and Logan Bennetteach scoring four in the loss.

Carbon will get back on the court on Wednesday when the Richfield Wildcats make a trip to Price.
