Following the crash that took the life of Green River Mayor Ren Hatt, the city has released plans for the interim, including a celebration honoring Hatt on Monday night and the naming of an acting mayor.

“Although this has been a difficult time for many people in town, city services have not been interrupted. Every department is working as usual, and the functions residents rely on day to day are continuing without delay,” reads a release from the city. “The city staff has shown strength and dedication, and we are grateful for their commitment during this difficult time.”

As part of this effort to keep the city moving, Green River has already appointed City Councilmember Bo Harrison as the acting mayor. In addition to Harrison, City Manager Edward Castro Bennett will continue to oversee the city’s day-to-day operations.

“While the loss of Mayor Hatt has been deeply felt, the structure of city government ensures continuity and stability even in moments of loss,” continues the statement. “Acting Mayor Harrison and the City Council are working closely with the City Manager to guide the city through the next steps required for succession planning. When those details are ready, the city will make them available to the public.”

The city also shared an updated plan for its annual ‘Light the Night’ event, which will now feature a candlelight vigil alongside the scheduled parade. This decision came after speaking to volunteers and residents of Green River, including Addision Gee, whom Hatt appointed to plan the event.

“The Light the Night event will be held at the same date, time, and place. Residents and guests are invited to begin lining up at 6 p.m. along Main Street, with the light parade ending at O.K. Anderson Park,” explained the city. “Instead of only being a holiday lighting ceremony, the city will gather as a community to reflect, to honor Mayor Hatt’s life, and to support one another in our grief. Hot cocoa and doughnuts will still be available, provided by volunteers who wanted to keep the spirit of giving alive during a difficult week.”

Closing the release, Mayor Harrison spoke on the impact of Hatt and the ceremony in his honor,” Ren has given so much to the city of Green River. Light the Night will give the community a chance to remember him and support his family at this difficult time.”

More updates on future succession plans for the city will be made on the city’s social media page.
