The Emery boys’ basketball squad welcomed the San Juan Broncos to the Spartan Center on Wednesday evening. These two schools share a competitive history, but on the basketball court Wednesday, it was all Spartans, who collected a 55-42 win.
Emery and San Juan have butted heads on the football field in recent memory, but they have also had some pretty epic battles on the basketball court as well, no matter the location.
The Spartans jumped out in the first quarter, showing no mercy as they would rack up 18 points, as offensively they couldn’t miss, and defensively they shut down the Broncos, outscoring them 18-4. In the second, Emery kept the pace as San Juan collected a few more points, but the Spartans still held a comfortable 31-11 lead at halftime.
Something was brewing at the end of the first half. In the third quarter, San Juan turned it loose as they went on a 15-8 run, cutting into the Spartan lead to get the score down to 39-26, but as they have done all season, Emery came back in the final eight minutes, never letting up and closed out the Broncos 55-42, collecting their seventh win of the season.
Porter Sitterud scored 22 in the contest to lead all scorers. Brek Griffin added 14, and Ajay Thomas dropped in seven in the win for the Spartans.
The Spartans will welcome the South Summit Wildcats to the Spartan Center on Friday.
