Friday night, the Carbon Dinos traveled to Green River to take on the Pirates. Carbon was coming off back-to-back losses, and Green River has been on an emotional rollercoaster since tragedy struck the town on December 5. The Pirates shot lights out early, but the Dinos showed determination, coming away with a 66-64 win.

Carbon had suffered losses in its last two games against Green Canyon and Richfield.

Green River is facing a different kind of loss. On December 5, Ren Hatt, the mayor of Green River and a teacher at Green River High School, was killed in a car accident. It is a loss that has hit the town hard. The next day they welcomed in the Panguitch Bobcats in front of an emotional home crowd, and gave Panguitch all they had falling by six. On the tenth, they traveled to Tabiona and earned a 67-62 win.

Green River came out on fire from beyond the arc, closing out the first quarter up 25-9. The Dinos would start chipping away at the Pirate lead in the second quarter, outscoring Green River 19-15, but the Pirates held a 40-28 lead at halftime.

The Pirates regrouped at the break, came out in the third, put up 14, and still held a slight edge, 54-43. In the fourth, with 55 seconds left, Carbon would steal a Green River inbound pass and find Carter Warburton on the wing, who hit a three-pointer, giving Carbon their first lead of the game, 64-63, with 44 seconds remaining. The Pirates took over on offense, trying to find the man with the hot hand all night, Rolando Anguiano in the corner. Anguiano had a good look but was fouled on the three-point shot, giving him three from the foul line. Angaiano had been deadly from the three-point line all evening, but only hit one of the free throws to tie the game up at 64 with 22 seconds left in regulation. Carbon brought the ball up, looking for their shot, and after a three-pointer missed the mark, Kyler Orth grabbed the rebound and was fouled as he went back up, giving him a pair of free throws with .2 seconds remaining. He calmly hit both, giving Carbon the 66-64 win.

For the Pirates, Anguiano put up 21 to lead all scorers. Jason Hernandez had 20, and Cristian Mendoza had 11 in the loss.

Warburton scored 18 for the Dinos, Ty Mortensen had 15, and Cash Withers added nine in the win.

Up next for Carbon is a trip to Nephi on Wednesday to take on the Juab Wasps.

Green River will face the Millard Eagles on Friday.
