Members of the Eastern Leaders Academy spent their December Experience Day exploring education at every stage of life, from early childhood through higher education. The day gave participants a firsthand look at the people, programs and pathways that help students succeed in school and beyond.

The day began at Rural Utah Child Development (RUCD) Head Start, where participants observed how the program supports young children and families. Leaders saw how RUCD promotes early learning, assists low-income families and helps ensure children are prepared to enter school. The visit highlighted the importance of access to early childhood education in our community.

From there, the group met with the superintendent of the Carbon School District, who shared insight into both the challenges and opportunities facing local K-12 education. The discussion highlighted how community members and leaders can better support educators, students and the school system as a whole.

At the Castle Valley Center, participants learned how this school serves children with disabilities. They joined students in a holiday craft activity, decorating stockings and connecting with them personally. This experience gave leaders a meaningful glimpse into the supportive, individualized environment the school provides.

Later, the group traveled to Utah State Eastern, where they ate lunch with student-athletes. Participants heard about the students’ experiences balancing academics and sports, what they enjoy most about campus life and the challenges they face. Through these conversations, participants gained a better understanding of how the community supports higher education and where additional support can still grow.

The group also toured various campus programs and degrees, such as nursing and cosmetology. At the Carbon County Airport, they explored the aviation and aviation maintenance program, showing how these programs provide real-world career experience.

Throughout the day, participants explored diverse educational pathways, attending presentations on charter schools and homeschooling. They also engaged in leadership discussions guided by ELA Champions, alumni of previous cohorts, which provided fresh perspectives and opportunities to reflect on supporting the community’s educational environment. The conversations encouraged humility, personal growth and continuous learning.

Next up, ELA participants will focus on Community Health and Wellness in January. During this day, leaders will learn about inspiring individuals and organizations working to keep their community healthy and thriving.
