The Lady Panthers faced a pair of teams over the weekend at the Winter Classic hosted by Pinnacle High School. Pinnacle faced Maeser Prep and Rockwell, falling to both opponents.

The Lady Panthers sit at 4-6 overall, and with the initial rankings being released by the Utah High School Activities Association, they are ranked 19th in the 1A classification. Tabiona was ranked at No. 1, followed by Valley and Wayne. Monument Valley and Panguitch round out the top five. These rankings will be updated, and when the State Championships roll around, they will be used to seed the tournament.

In their opening match-up, the Panthers faced the Maeser Prep Lions. The Lions overwhelmed Pinnacle, holding them to just six points, taking a 55-6 win.

Maeser jumped on the Panthers in the first half, allowing just one point and taking a 35-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.  In the second half, the Panthers found a bit more offense but not enough as the Lions had dialed things back a bit and coasted to a 55-6 win.

Zaya Anderson scored four for the Lady Panthers while Jazmyne Mullis and Tatianna Carpenter each had one in the loss.

In the second game on Friday, the Lady Panthers faced the Rockwell Marshals. Pinnacle had the lead heading into he fourth, but their offense went cold, and they fell 35-28.

The Panthers came out in the first quarter, taking a 12-6 lead into the second. The script was flipped in the second as Rockwell scored 11 and held Pinnacle to four points in the quarter, taking a 17-16 lead to the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, neither team would try to take over, although the Lady Panthers added seven more to their total, holding Rockwell to single-digit scoring and leading 23-21 heading into the fourth. The Marshals turned the offense back on in the final eight minutes to retake the lead and close out Pinnacle 35-28.

Acacia McLean scored 17 for Pinnacle. Mullis added 5, and Regan Cloward had four in the loss.

Pinnacle won’t retake the floor until January 9, when they face Monticello.
