The Lady Pirates are searching for their first win of the season, heading into the Pinnacle Winter Classic, sitting at 0-6. Green River played three games in two days and was unable to collect a victory, falling to 0-9 on the season.

In the opening game of the tournament, they faced the Vanguard Academy Knights. Vanguard jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking the 55-27 win.

The Knights jumped out in the first, taking a massive 19-2 lead, which left the Lady Pirates fighting their way back for the remainder of the contest.  In the second, the Pirates outscored the Knights but made little dent in the scoring, and the teams headed to halftime with Vanguard leading 27-11.

In the second half, the Knights were on offense again, almost shutting down the Pirates and pushing their lead to 49-13. The final quarter was just like the second, with the Lady Pirates putting something together to find some offense, scoring 14 points, but Vanguard still coasted to a 55-27 win.

Mattie Meadows led the Pirates with eight.  Norra Barragan scored six and Brailie Parsons four in the loss.

In the second game on Friday, the Pirates faced the Rockwell Marshals. Rockwell jumped out with a big first quarter to take the 46-24 win.

The Marshals came out firing in the first, taking a 20-5 lead. In the second quarter, Green River looked to cut into the Marshals’ lead, holding them to four points in the quarter and adding eight to go to the locker room down 24-13.

In the third, Rockwell came out, turning the offense back on and running their lead up to 40-21. In the fourth, neither team seemed to have much gas left in the tank, but the Marshals had built up enough of a lead and took the 46-24 win.

Parsons led the Pirates in this one with nine. Kenley Dinkins had six, and Gracie Burnett scored four in the loss.

In their final contest, they would take on the Utah Military Academy at Camp Williams Maurauders. The Lady Pirates would almost get their first win of the season as they fought for everything in this game, but couldn’t get over the hump, falling 33-30.

The first quarter was both teams getting a feel for each other as they kept the pace, with the Maurauders taking a slight edge, 11-7, after one. In the second, Green River would outscore UMACW 8-7, going into the locker room down 18-15.

In the second half, the Lady Pirates went right back to work and once again outscored the Maurauders by one as the two teams headed to the final eight minutes with Camp Williams still in the lead 25-23. In the fourth, the Maurauders would do just enough to keep the lead to their advantage and take the 33-30 win over the Lady Pirates.

Meadows scored nine for Green River. Dinkins scored eight, and Parsons added seven in the loss.

The Utah High School Activities Association, along with MaxPreps, released its initial rankings for 1A basketball, and the Lady Pirates sit in the No. 20 spot.  Tabiona sits at No. 1, followed by Valley, Wayne, Monument Valley, and Panguitch, rounding out the top five. The rankings will be updated throughout the season and then used to seed the State Championships.

The Lady Pirates get back on the court on January 2 when they travel to Piute.
