The Dino boys’ basketball team made the trip to Vernal on Wednesday evening to take on the Union Cougars to open up region play. Carbon was down 13 at the half, and had a big third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cougars as the Dinos lost 67-59.

Carbon sits at 5-10 overall and 0-1 in region play. They also hold the No. 12 spot in the latest rankings from MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association, with seven games left before the State Championships start just over a month from now on February 13.

In the first half, the Dinos tried to keep pace with the Cougars, but Union jumped out to an 18-12 lead after the opening quarter. In the second, the Cougars and Dinos matched their intensity, which spilled over from the first period; however, Union went to the locker room at halftime up by 13, 37-24.

In the third quarter, Carbon was the aggressor, scoring 20 points while holding the Cougars to 11, but Union held a slight lead going into the final eight minutes, 48-44. In the fourth, the Cougars turned the offense back on and used it to pull away from the Dinos, earning the 67-59 win.

Logan Bennett led Carbon with 18. Carter Warburton scored 16, and Kyler Orth had six in the loss.

Carbon will get some time off now. They will be back on the court on Wednesday, January 14, when they travel to Mount Pleasant to take on the North Sanpete Hawks.
