The Spartan boys basketball team was on the road in Monroe on Tuesday for a non-region tilt with the South Sevier Rams. In their final non-conference contest of the season, Emery was in the fight through three quarters, down by just three, but went cold on the fourth as the Rams handed them a 73-53 loss.
Emery sits at 10-6 overall and 1-0 in region play, and in the latest rankings from MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association, it sits at No. 4, with just six games to go until the State Championships begin on February 13.
In the opening quarter, the Rams came out firing, while the Spartans struggled from the field, and South Sevier pushed the lead to 15-2 with about 2 minutes left. Emery then found some scoring, cutting the Rams’ lead to 21-10 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Emery saw their opportunity to make a move and took it as the shots that were falling for the Rams in the first quarter couldn’t find their mark, and with a three-pointer at around the one-minute mark, Brek Griffin gave the Spartans their first lead, 30-28, taking that lead to halftime.
In the third, the Spartans would push their lead to as high as eight points, but by the end of the quarter, South Sevier had regained the lead, 47-44, as the crowd was ready to head to the fourth. In the final quarter, South Sevier regained the stroke they had in the first, and unfortunately, Emery couldn’t respond as the Rams outscored the Spartans 26-9, closing out Emery 73-53.
Brek Griffin was the leading scorer for the Spartans, putting up 18 in the contest. Porter Sitterud added 15, and Maddex Taney and Logan Lester each added six in the loss.
Emery will be back on the floor Wednesday evening when they jump back into region play as the Cougars from Union will come to the Spartan Center.
