Green River Pirate basketball was on the road on Tuesday evening when they traveled to Moab to take on the Grand County Red Devils. This was the second time these two had met up this season, and unfortunately for the Pirates, they came up on the short end of the stick, 55-48.
Green River sits at 9-7 overall and 2-0 in region play, holding on to the No. 7 spot in the latest rankings compiled by MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association. These two teams met up in Green River back in early December, with the Pirates coming out on top 71-64, and they were looking to repeat that in Moab.
Green River dominated the first three quarters in the contest as they came out and held a slight lead, 12-11, after one. In the second quarter, it was more Green River, less Grand, as the Pirates scored 18, holding the Red Devils to 15, and taking a 30-26 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the third, the Pirates came out and maintained their lead, outscoring Grand by two, 11-9, and carried a 41-35 lead into the fourth quarter. It was the final eight minutes that led to Green River’s undoing, as the Red Devils turned up their defense and their offense outscored the Pirates 20-7, closing them out and taking a 48-55 win.
Rolando Anguiano led the way for the Pirates with 12 in the contest. David Mendez added 11, and Cristian Mendoza had 10 in the loss.
The Pirates jump back on the court on Thursday when they welcome Whitehorse.
Game time is set for 7:00 p.m..
