The Green River Pirate boys basketball squad welcomed the Whitehorse Raiders to the gym on Thursday night. Coming off a non-region loss, Green River was looking to get back into the win column, and did just that by the score of 68-50.

Green River sits at 10-7 overall and 3-0 in region play. They also hold onto the No. 7 spot in the most recent rankings from MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association. In their most recent game, they faced the Grand County Red Devils in a non-region match-up with Green River taking the 55-48 loss.

In the early going, both teams came out firing, but it was Green River that held a slight lead at the end of one, 16-15. In the second quarter, the Pirates took over, turning up their defense as they held the Raiders to just five points, and added 20, taking a 36-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Raiders came out finding a bit of offense, putting up 14 points. The Pirates added another 20 points, pushing their lead to 56-34, as the two teams headed to the fourth. Whitehorse used the final eight minutes to try to carve away at the Green River lead, but the Pirates did just enough to hold the Raiders at arm’s length to take the 68-50 win.

Jason Hernandez led all scorers with 33 in the game, adding seven assists, four rebounds, and three steals. David Mendez added 18 with seven rebounds, four steals, and a pair of assists. Rolando Anguiano added eight to go with five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Green River gets back on the court on Saturday when the Monticello Buckaroo comes to town.
