The Spartan Center was the place to be on Thursday night as the Lady Spartans welcomed the Union Cougars. This was the second time the two teams had met up in the regular season, and Emery was looking for the perfect sweep. Emery didn’t necessarily overpower Union; they slowly and quietly built the lead through four quarters, taking a 51-37 win.
Emery sits at 12-8 overall with a 5-1 Region 13 record and has the No. 3 spot in the latest polls from MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association. Next week will bring an end to the regular season, and no game will be bigger than Tuesday, when they face No. 2 North Sanpete.
The Lady Spartans came out in the opening quarter of play with defense on their mind, holding the Cougars to just five points and taking an 11-5 lead into the second. In the next quarter, Union came out looking to cut into that lead, putting up seven, but Emery still held a 20-12 advantage going into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the third, the Lady Spartans came out a little more offensively minded, looking to close out the Union Cougars, putting up 19 in the quarter while holding Union to 12, taking a 39-24 lead heading into the fourth. In the final eight minutes, the Cougars still had some fight left in them as they came out and put up 13 in the quarter, but Emery had built enough of a lead and held on to coast to a 51-37 win, earning the season sweep over Union.
For the Lady Spartans, Aleeyah Cowley scored 21 and grabbed four rebounds. Addie Hurst added nine with an assist and a steal, and Megan Stilson scored six with three rebounds, a steal, and a block in the contest.
Coming up for the Lady Spartans is a monumental contest against the No. 2-ranked North Sanpete Hawks on Tuesday. North Sanpete will enter the contest at 15-5 with a 7-0 region record, and when these two teams met in Mount Pleasant on January 15th, Emery fell 60-54. Since it will be the final home game of the regular season, it will also be senior night.
