
On Wednesday and Thursday, the best wrestlers in 3A met at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield on the campus of Snow College. For the Dinos, a pair of wrestlers, Jantz Greenhalgh and Riker Ohearon, claimed state championships in their weight classes, while five other Dinos finished in the top six in their divisions.
Greenhalgh claimed the top spot at 106 pounds. Ohearon claimed back-to-back state titles at 138 pounds. Jared Simmons took second in the 285-pound class, and Jack Burdick at 157 pounds took third. JJ Munoz at 120 pounds and Ashdyn Densley in the 113-pound class claimed fourth. Andrew Kifer at 215 pounds took sixth.
Greenhalgh’s march to a state title began in his first match against Sway McCoy of Logan, where he claimed a quick victory by pin. In his second match, he faced Rider Sullivan of Grantsville and secured another victory by pin, moving him into his third-round match against Bowdee McPherson of Juab, which he won by technical fall. In the championship round, he would face another wrestler from Juab, Jack Holman, and win by pin to claim his state championship. Greenhalgh was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.
Ohearon was going after his second state title at 138 pounds, and he got started in his first match of the day against Macen Fearn of Morgan, claiming a win by pin. In his second match, he faced Justice Smith of Logan, claiming victory by pin in that one as well. His third match to earn a spot in the championship came against Abraham Meraz of Canyon View, and once again, he would claim a victory to move into the Championship Round. In the first-place match, he was not going to be denied his second state title, as he won by major decision, 15-2, over Drake Johnson of Juab.
Simmons wrestled at 285 pounds, finishing second with a 3-1 record. In his opening match, he took on Kohl Bailey of Delta, winning by pin. He took the win in match number two against Tevon Vakautakakala of Richfield, earning the victory by pin as well. In the semifinal match, he earned the victory over Trentyn Aguire of Grantsville by default, moving into the championship round, where he fell to Tate Killian of Canyon View by pin.
Burdick at 157 pounds went 4-1 with his sole loss coming to Luke Woolsley of Morgan by a major decision 17-6. He would make it all the way to the third-place match, earning the win over Saxton Stradinger of Union by a 9-5 decision.
Densley went 4-2 in his matches to finish in fourth place. In his final match of the tournament, he would wrestle for third place, coming up just short against Evan Sento of Ben Lomond. Munoz went 3-2, taking fourth place at 120 lb, falling in the third-place match to Liam Nielsen of Juab. Kifer went 3-3, taking sixth place, winning his final match by major decision over Isaac Mecham of Manti, 13-1.
Juab collected the team Championship, followed by Canyon View in second. Morgan finished third, with Delta in fourth, and the Dinos rounded out the group, taking fifth.
