A localized storm system in Emery County created chaos along a mile-long stretch of I-70 Thursday afternoon as a rapid accumulation of slush led to five vehicle accidents between mile markers 130 and 131.
“A rapid accumulation of slush resulted in five separate vehicle accidents within a matter of minutes,” reads a statement from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office. “The severity of the road conditions led to significant incidents, including three vehicle rollovers. A multiagency response was required to secure the scene and provide medical aid.”
This response saw deputies from the ECSO on the scene alongside troopers from the Utah Highway Patrol. Also present were the Emery Fire Department and ambulances from Ferron, Emery and Green River.
Injuries were reported in all five crashes; however, ECSO shared that none were considered life-threatening in nature.
In response to rapidly changing conditions, the ECSO encouraged drivers to plan ahead, monitor conditions, and adapt their driving to them. “
“The weather is currently unpredictable, and road conditions can deteriorate in seconds,” stated the office. “Stay safe and stay informed.”
