The Green River Pirate boys basketball squad ended its regular season last Wednesday with a 72-32 win over the Pinnacle Panthers, and then the waiting game started. The game ended Monday morning when the Utah High School Activities Association released the final ranking and the bracket for the 1A State Championships.
The Pirates finished with a 16-7 overall mark and claimed the Region 19 title with a perfect 8-0 record, which was enough to earn them the No. 7 spot in the rankings.
The duo of Jason Hernandez and Rolando Anguiano leads the Pirates. Hernandez has averaged 21 points per game this season, with Anguiano close behind with 17.9. Hernandez is also averaging 6.7 assists per contest, which puts him at No. 4 statewide across all classifications. And the duo is also in the top ten of assists statewide with 3.7. The Pirates have also won 11 of their last 12 games.
The Pirates will take on the winner of the No. 23 Dugway and No. 10 Monticello match-up, which will take place on Tuesday in Monticello.
The Pirates will start their march in Green River on Friday, February 20, with tip-off at 7:00 p.m. A win will send the Pirates to the quarterfinals at Salt Lake Community College starting on Thursday, February 26.
