009-15

On Friday evening, the Pinnacle Panther basketball team traveled to Monticello to take on the Buckaroo. This was the second time these two teams have faced each other this season, and it brought the regular season to a close. The Panthers would lead the contest through three quarters, but the Buckaroo came out in the fourth, erasing Pinnacle’s lead to earn a 46-43 win.

The Panthers finished the regular season with a 9-11 overall record, going 2-6 in region play. On Monday morning, they learned their final ranking and who and where they will open the postseason.

On Friday, the opening quarter was low-scoring but competitive, as Monticello took a 7-6 lead after one.  Pinnacle turned on the scoring in the second quarter, outscoring the Buckaroo 14-8 and building a 20-15 lead as both teams headed to the locker room at halftime.

Monticello would be on the offensive after the break, putting up 12 points and cutting into the Panther lead to get within striking distance, 29-27, heading into the fourth. In the final eight minutes, Monticello fed off of the home crowd to take control of the game, closing out the Panthers 46-43.

Bryson Shumway led Pinnalce with 10 points. Brody Howell, Joey Howell, and Diego Contreras each scored eight in the loss.

On Monday morning, MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association released the final rankings along with the bracket for the 1A State Championships. Pinnacle landed in the No. 14 spot and will welcome the No. 19 Wendover Wildcats to Price.  A win over Wendover means a road trip to take on the No. 3 Piute Thunderbirds in their gym on Friday.
