The Emery Spartan soccer team headed back to the pitch on Tuesday as they welcomed the Beaver Beavers. Emery started fast, taking control early as they went on to take a 5-1 victory in the opening match of the season.
Last season did not go the way the Spartans had hoped, as they finished 2-17 overall and 0-14 in region play. In a much smaller Region 13 this year, they will face teams from Union, North Sanpete, Manti, and Carbon.
The Spartans came out firing, scoring four goals in the first half. Defensively, they held the Beavers to a single goal, and Emery went into halftime up 4-1.
The second half was all about maintaining the lead, and Emery did just that as the defense pitched a shutout in the second half to take a 5-1 victory to start the 2026 season.
Seth Winter led the Spartans with a hat trick, scoring three goals for Emery. Zach Canterberry and Ryker Sermon each scored one goal. Corbin Ward added a pair of assists, and Marcelo Gordilho added another in the win.
Next up on the schedule is a date with the Delta Rabbits on Thursday. The Spartans faced Delta twice last season, losing both meetings.
After Thursday, the Spartans will head south for the St. George tournament. On Friday, they will take on the Snow Canyon Warriors, and on Saturday, they will face the Enterprise Wolves.
