The Spartan soccer squad was on the road on Tuesday to take on the Grantsville Cowboys. Coming off a .500 performance in St. George last weekend, Emery was eager to get back on the field. The game with the Cowboys was still 0-0 after the opening half, but Grantsville was able to get one past the Spartans’ defense to take a 1-0 win.
The Spartans went 1-1 in St. George, starting last Friday with a loss to Snow Canyon. Emery was able to turn it around with a win on Saturday against the Enterprise Wolves.
The game with Grantsville was a defensive gem, as both teams fought through the first half, neither finding a way around the other’s defense, and the period ended in a stalemate, 0-0 at halftime.
The second half started out the same as the first until Grantsville’s Wilkes Perkins found the back of the net on an assist from Boston Chambers, giving the Cowboys the lead and eventually the 1-0 win.
The Spartans sit at 2-3 overall. The two wins match last season’s total, and if they are going to get back in the win column, they will have to do it on the road.
The next four games for the Spartans will be on the road. They will get started on Thursday when they travel to face South Summit. They follow that up with road contests against Carbon, North Sanpete, and Manti.
The Spartans will be back home on March 27 when they welcome Union.
