Traveling to the Uinta Basin for their lone contest of the week, the Emery Spartans challenged the Uintah Utes in a non-region tilt. Entering the bottom of the fifth with a one-run lead, the Spartans found themselves on the wrong end of a run, giving up six runs in the frame, eventually falling to the Utes 13-7.

An early error got the Spartans’ scoring started, with Beau Stilson scoring the first run of the game. Peyton Nelson would also score in the frame to build an early 2-0 lead. Uintah answered back in the bottom of the first to head into the second down 2-1.

After going scoreless in the top of the second, the Spartans allowed three runs to bleed through, giving the Utes a 4-2 advantage at the end of two.

Emery cut into this deficit at the top of the third on a hard hit single from Braxton Royse that drove in Nelson to make it a 4-3 affair.

The hot Emery bats continued into the fourth, with Nelson scoring his third run of the game, this time coming off a triple struck by Trygg Jensen. Jensen would also score on the play due to a fielder’s error. Emery would score once more in the fourth, with Jess Larsen sending a double to center field, bringing in Tyce Larsen, allowing the Spartans to retake the lead 6-3.

Uintah would waste no time getting back in the game, however, knotting the score at six apiece with a two-run bottom of the fourth.

Emery scored their final run of the contest in the top of the fifth, with Trey Neilson striking a single to bring home Ben Johansen and make it a 7-6 affair.

Unfortunately for Emery, Uintah’s bats would explode in the bottom of the fifth, with the Utes driving in six runs to claim an imposing 12-6 advantage.

The Utes tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth, bringing their lead to 13-6, a margin too much for Emery to overcome, as they fell in the contest.

Peyton Neilson led the way for Emery, scoring three runs in the afternoon. Johansen went three-for-four with one run, and Stilson scored one run on two hits. As a unit, the Spartans’ pitching staff allowed 13 runs on 12 hits while combining for three strikeouts.

Up next for Emery, the Spartans travel to Juab on Tuesday, March 17, for a showdown against the Wasps.
