On Friday afternoon at the Carbon County softball complex, the Lady Dinos welcomed the North Sanpete Hawks for their home opener for the 2026 softball season. In a game that would eventually go extra innings, the Hawks came up in the top of the eighth scoring three runs to take the win 7-4.

The Lady Dinos have worked through their preseason schedule and are headed into the heart of the Region 13 schedule, sitting at 4-5 overall.

After a scoreless first inning, North Sanpete came up in the top of the second to add a pair of runs, and then it was Carbon’s turn to try and answer; however, they would remain scoreless until the bottom of the third, when with two outs Alexa Jones sent a single to left bringing in Bella Nelson to get the Dinos on the board. Carbon added one more run off of an Ardohain triple that scored Jones.

The Dinos would remain quiet for the next three innings as North Sanpete added a pair of runs to take the lead by two heading into the bottom of the seventh. Carbon would get two on as the inning would open with a pair of singles from Kadence Vea and Shayla Penovich, then with one out, Jones came back into the batter’s box and sent a ground ball to right, bringing Penovich and Lacie Gregerson, who had entered the game as a courtesy runner for Vea, home to score, and send the game to the eighth.

The Hawks came up to bat first and put three runs up to take the lead 7-4. Carbon could not match their score and fell in the contest.

Despite the loss, Jones had a big day for the Lady Dinos, going 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored. Ardohain was 1-4 with an RBI, Vea went 2-4, and Penovich was 2-3 with a run scored as well in the loss.

Vea got the start on the mound, giving up seven runs, six earned, on six hits, and struck out three.

Carbon is back on the diamond on Tuesday when they welcome the Emery Spartans. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
