Following the announcement earlier in the month that the Southeast Utah Health Department had confirmed a positive measles case in Carbon County, Sally Mauro Elementary notified parents on Sunday that the SEUHD had confirmed a positive case of the virus at the school.
“SEUHD has confirmed a positive measles case of a student at Sally Mauro Elementary. Contact tracing is being performed by the health department, and they are contacting those who may need to take special precautions,” reads a bulletin sent by the school. “All students that are to be excluded from school for a period of time have been notified by the school nurse with those details.”
Measles cases around the state continue to climb, with exposures occurring across the state, including recent exposures along the Wasatch Front at movie theaters, coffee shops and the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium.
According to data from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, during the 24/25 school year, about 10% of in-person kindergarten students in Utah had an exemption for the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. The SEUHD, which covers Carbon, Emery, and Grand Counties, saw 7.7% of kindergarten students exempted from any school-required vaccine.
According to state data, southeastern Utah has now seen a total of four confirmed cases of Measles in 2025 and 2026. Statewide, Utah has 443 confirmed cases at the time of writing.
Symptoms of the virus typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure, and can include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- A rash that starts on the face and spreads downward
For those looking to get vaccinated against the virus, the SUEHD offers the MMR vaccine at each of its offices.
