The Spartan baseball team was back on the diamond on Wednesday, this time on the road to take on the Salem Hills Skyhawks. Coming off the home opening loss to Union on Tuesday, Emery was ready to put the game behind them, but they once again ran into some impressive pitching, collecting just three hits in the 14-0 loss.
In the contest with Union, they ran into Tyson Marx, who gave up just three hits to the Spartans while striking out five.
The Skyhawks would use a pair of pitchers who allowed three hits and struck out six. That, coupled with the defense in the field, made for a difficult outing for Emery.
The Spartans collected two singles in the opening inning from Trygg Jensen and Garrett Conover. The Skyhawks would do the majority of their damage in the second inning, which was capped by a home run to give Salem Hills the 7-0 lead.
Jensen would come up in the top of the fourth getting a leadoff single, but the Spartans would end the inning scoreless. Salem Hills added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans would come up in the top of the fifth but were unable to create any offense as the Skyhawks closed out Emery 14-0 in five innings.
Jensen went 2-2 in the game, and Conover was 1-2 in the loss.
Mason Thornley got the start on the mound, going just one inning, giving up five earned runs on one hit. Tyce Larsen went the rest of the way and surrendered nine runs, seven earned, on six hits.
The Spartans get back on the diamond on Friday when they travel to Roosevelt to take on the Union Cougars.
