
The Lady Spartan softball team played four games in two days on Friday and Saturday before they head into the Spring Break Holiday. Friday, they faced the Manti Templars on the road in a region tilt, falling 2-1. On Saturday, they traveled to Richfield to take part in a one-day tournament, finishing 1-2.
The Lady Spartans sit at 2-9 overall and 1-1 in Region 13 play. The first rankings from MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association will be released on Friday, April 3.
The game against Manti on Friday was a low-scoring affair, and even though the Lady Spartans collected more hits than the Templars, they struggled to get them across the plate, putting up just one run in the third. Manti added runs in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the 2-1 win.
Elly Stilson went 1-3, scoring the only run for Emery. Aleeyah Cowley went 3-3 with an RBI. Brielle Tuttle was 1-3, Bailey Luke went 2-3, and Morgan Tuttle was 1-3 in the loss.
Allison Jeffs got the start on the mound, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out one.
Starting the day off in Richfield, the Lady Spartans would face the host Wildcats on Saturday morning. Richfield put up four runs in the second inning, and the Spartans could only add four, taking the loss, 9-4.
In the bottom of the first. Cowley was able to cross the plate during the final at-bat to take the lead for Emery 1-0. Richfield answered back to knot things up at 1-1, and then would keep the Lady Spartans scoreless in the second as the Wildcats would add four runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 5-1.
Emery came up in the top of the third, Cowley came to the plate with the bases loaded, sending a single to center, Stilson scored on an error, and Morgan Tuttle scored in the same at-bat. In the bottom of the third, Richfield added another run, and then after holding Emery scoreless in the fourth, the Wildcats came up and added three more to push the score to 9-3.
The Lady Spartans added one more at the top of the fifth when Cowley sent a single to center, bringing in Hadley Larsen, putting the score at 9-4 as the Wildcats claimed the win.
Cowley was 3-3 with two RBIs and scored one run, and Stilson was 1-3, scoring one run. Brielle Tuttle was 1-1 in the loss.
Jeffs was on the mound once again giving up nine runs, three earned on eight hits and struck out seven.
In the only win of the weekend, the Lady Spartans exploded in the first for 12 runs to take a 15-13 win over Parowan.
Cowley came up to the plate in the bottom of the first with Stilson and Larsen on and sent a home run over the center field wall to get the scoring started for Emery. Four batters later, with one out, Luke would score on a passed ball during Hadley Grimm’s at-bat, Jeffs would also score, giving Emery the 5-0 lead. The next batter up was Madison Tuttle, and she sent a single to second to bring in Zadriee Norton. With the score at 7- 0, Stoker came to the plate and sent a single to left, driving in Stilson, giving Emery the 9-0 lead. Norton came up and sent a ground ball to left to bring in Stoker, closing out the inning at 12-0.
Parowan came out in the second inning and added five runs to cut into the Emery lead at 12-5. The Lady Spartans got one run back in the bottom of the inning from a Stilson line drive that brought Madison Tuttle in to score.
It was the bottom of the third when the Spartans came up to solidify the win as Ailee Wilde stepped up to the plate and after a first pitch ball, Luke seized the opportunity of a wild pitch to score and top out Emery, taking the lead at 15-6. Parowan came up in the top of the fourth and put a scare in the Spartans, adding seven runs in the inning, but the Spartans were able to stop the onslaught and took the 15-13 win in four.
Stilson was 1-1 with two runs scored and an RBI. Larsen went 1-2 with a pair of runs and an RBI, and Cowley was 1-2 with two runs and an RBI. Cowley was 1-2 with three RBIs and a pair of runs, Luke was 2-2 with three runs, and Morgan Tuttle went 2-3, scoring two runs.
Stoker started on the mound, going two innings with five earned runs and three hits. Wilde went 1.2, giving up eight runs, four earned, on eight hits, and struck out one, and Jeffs closed things out with two hits and a strikeout.
The final contest of the day was against San Juan. The Broncos shut down the Lady Spartans, as San Juan allowed no runs or hits, taking a 16-0 win in four innings.
Jeffs started on the mound, going 3.2 innings and giving up 13 runs, seven earned, on 14 hits while striking out one. Stoker closed out the contest and surrendered three runs on two hits.
Emery will now head into Spring Break. They will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 7, to face the North Sanopete Hawks in Castle Dale.
Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
