On Thursday morning, the initial rankings for 3A baseball were released. Compiled by MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association, the standings will be updated throughout the season and then used for seeding at the State Championships. The Carbon Dinos sit in the No. 8 position, and the Emery Spartans land in the No. 12 spot.
The Delta Rabbits earned the No. 1 spot overall, followed by the Union Cougars. Grantsville sits at No. 3, Manti at No. 4, and Providence Hall rounds out the top five. Two Region 13 teams sit in the top five (Union, No. 2, and Manti, No. 5)
The Dinos sit at 6-8 overall and 0-2 in Region 13 play. They have been playing in various tournaments as they worked their way into conference play, and on March 24 & 27, they faced the Manti Templars. The contest on March 24 was in Price, and the Dinos had issues getting runs on the board, falling 7-3. In the game on March 27, in Manti, Carbon battled throughout but came up just short, 7-6. The Dinos will be home on Thursday, April 2, when they welcome the Salem Hills Skyhawks. Gametime is set for 3:00 p.m.
The Spartans are 2-8 and carry a 0-2 mark in Region 13 play. They have been working their way through the pre-season tournament set to get ready for conference play as well. They have already squared off with the Union Cougars from Region 13, falling in both contests. In the game at Castle Dale, the Cougars shut down the Spartans’ scoring, taking a 13-0 win. The contest in Roosevelt wasn’t much different, as the Spartans showed some offense but not enough, and Union claimed the 9-4 win. The Spartans are back on the diamond Thursday as well in Provo to take on the Timpview Thunderbirds. They will step back on the diamond in Castle Dale on April 10 when they welcome the Manti Templars for a 3:00 p.m. start.
The rankings will be updated until the end of the season on May 5. The following day, Wednesday, May 6, the final rankings and bracket will be revealed for the 3A State Championships, which will begin with Super Regional matchups at home sites in a best-of-three series on May 7 & 8. Bracket play will begin on May 13 & 14 at Lindquist Field in Ogden, with the Championships taking place on May 15 & 16 at Gates Field on the campus of Kearns High School.
