The Emery baseball squad wrapped up play during spring break on Friday when they welcomed the Timpview Thunderbirds to Castle Dale. Emery jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first two innings, but it was all Timpview after that as they took the win 7-6.
The Spartans sit at 2-9 overall, with a 0-2 record in Region 13 play, and hold the No. 12 spot in the latest rankings from MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association.
After holding Timpview off the board at the top of the first inning, Garrett Conover stepped up to the plate with one out and sent a single to center field, bringing Ben Johansen in to score. During Tyce Larsen’s at-bat, Trygg Jensen would steal home to give Emery a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Jess Larsen would double to left field, bringing Conover into score, and the inning would end in the next at-bat with the Spartans holding a 3-0 advantage.
The Spartans would once again hold the Thunderbirds scoreless at the top of the second and in the bottom half of the inning with two outs and one on, Johansen sent a fly ball to right field, reaching on an error and bringing Easton Stoker home to score. One batter later, with two on, Conover would come to the plate, and Johansen would score on a steal of home as Conover drew a walk. The inning closed with the Spartans opening their lead up to 5-0.
Timpview came up in the top of the third looking to get on the board, and they did just that, and by the end of the inning the Emery lead had shrunk to 5-4. In their half of the third with two outs and one on, the Spartans’ Bodee Norton would send a line drive to left field, making it to second, and Drake Stillson came in to score to put the Spartans up 6-4.
The bats would go silent for both squads over the next two innings, but Timpview was able to add three runs in the top of the third and then held Emery scoreless through the remainder of the contest, taking the 7-6 win.
Stoker went 2-4 in the contest, scoring one run for the Spartans. Conover was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Johansen went 1-4 with two runs scored.
Jensen got the start on the mound, going three innings with four earned runs on four hits and striking out six. Conover put in four Innings of work with three runs, one earned, on one hit, and struck out eight in the loss.
The Spartans will get on the diamond on Tuesday, traveling to Manti to face the Templars. They will close out the week when Manti comes to Castle Dale.
