
On Monday, the Emery Spartan baseball team traveled to Parowan to play in a rare doubleheader. In two games with the Rams, the Spartans found some serious offense, racking up 25 runs combined. In game one, they won 14-3, and in game two, they won 11-4.
With the two wins, Emery is at 8-12 overall and currently ranks No. 10 in MaxPreps.
Emery got things going early in the first game, posting four runs in the first inning, starting with a Garrett Conover double that would drive in Trygg Jensen. Beau Stilson came to the plate next, and during his at-bat, Peyton Nielson came in to score from third. Stilson fired a single to third, scoring Conover. One batter later, Drake Stilson came to the plate, and Beau Stilson scored on a wild pitch to give the Spartans the lead 4-0. Emery added one more in the second from a Conover sacrifice fly to center that drove in Ben Johansen.
The Spartans came to the plate in the third, after the Rams had added a pair of runs and with two outs and two on, sending a single to right that brought Drake Stilson and Easton Stoker in to score, pushing the Spartan lead to 7-2. Emery added one in the fourth on another sacrifice fly off the bat of Conover that brought Peyton Nielson home.
Things were quiet for both teams, though Parowan would add one in the bottom of the fourth, but Emery broke the silence in the sixth when Conover came to the plate, and Jensen scored from second on an error by the third baseman. Conover would eventually draw a walk.
Emery would come up in the top of the fifth already leading 9-3. Jensen stepped into the batter’s box, and the second pitch he looked out got away from the catcher, allowing Trey Nielson to score from third. Jensen would be hit by a pitch and took his base. Next up was Peyton Nielson, who sent a grounder to left that allowed Johansen to make it in to score. Conover would double in the next at-bat to bring Jensen in. The scoring would end as Stoker sent a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Conover to score after tagging up. The inning would end with the Spartans up 14-3, and after holding the Rams scoreless in the seventh, Emery earned the win.
Johansen was 4-5 scoring two runs and adding an RBI for Emery. Beau Stilson went 3-5 with two RBIs and scored a run, and Conover was 2-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the win.
Tyce Larsen got the start on the mound, putting in three innings and giving up two earned on four hits and striking out two. Trey Nielson went three innings, with one earned run on four hits, and struck out three. Peyton Nielson closed out the contest with a pair of strikeouts.
In game two, Emery got started early once again as Johansen would score off an error by the third baseman during Peyton Nielson’s at-bat. Conover came to the plate and had another sacrifice fly in him when he sent one to center, bringing Jensen home to score. One batter later, Trey Nielson singled to left to bring in Beau Stilson and gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Parowan added a run in the bottom half of the inning and then tied things up in the bottom of the third at 3-3.
Moving into the fifth, Peyton Nielson came to the plate with one out and sent a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Johansen to score. One batter later, Beau Stilson would hit a double to right, allowing Conover to score and put the Spartans on top 5-3.
In the sixth, wth two out, Emery would go on a bit of a run. Easton Stoker got it started with a homerun over the left field wall that brought Larsen home. Three batters later and with the bases loaded, Conover stepped in, and after a ball on the first pitch, Johansen would take the opportunity to score on a wild pitch, advancing Jensen to third, who would then score on an error by the catcher, giving the Spartans a commanding 9-3 lead.
After holding the Rams scoreless in the sixth, the Spartans came back to the plate in the top of the seventh and would score two more runs. The first came as Larsen sent a sacrifice fly to right, driving in Beau Stilson, then a couple of batters later, Trey Nielson scored on a wild pitch in Jensen’s at bat, pushing the Emery lead to 11-3. The Spartans gave up one run in the bottom of the seventh and then shut the door on Parowan, taking the 11-4 win.
Beau Stilson had a day going 4-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Spartans. Jensen went 2-5 with a pair of runs, and Johansen was 2-4 with three runs in the win.
Peyton Nielson got the start, going two innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits. Stoker went the rest of the way with two earned runs on six hits and striking out two.
Emery will be back on the diamond Tuesday when they travel to Price for the first of two games with the Dinos this week.
