The Lady Dinos started the 3A State Championships for softball on Saturday against a familiar foe, the Manti Templars. In both of their Region 13 meetings this season, the Templars came out on top, and in Saturday’s game, the Dinos collected eight hits but could only score two runs in a 10-2 loss.

Carbon tried to navigate its way through the contest, facing Manti’s Aidali Orcozo on the mound, who earned the complete game for the Templars as she gave up eight hits to the Dino bats and pitched four shutout innings. The Lady Dinos would break through at the top of the fifth when down 10-0, Aleece Ardohain sent a double to center, bringing Alexa Jones and Bella Nelson to score the only runs for Carbon in the game. The Templars shut the Dinos down in the remainder of the contest to take the 10-2 win.

Kennlee Kennedy was 3-3 for the Dinos. Nelson went 2-3, scoring one run, Shayla Penovich went 1-3, Jones was 1-4 with a run, and Ardohain went 1-4 with a pair of RBIs in the loss.

Kadence Vea got the start on the mound, going three innings with 10 runs, four earned on five hits, striking out three. Josie Vea closed out the contest, giving up five hits and striking out one.

The Lady Dinos now wait for the outcome of the Grantsville/Emery contest on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. in Spanish Fork. Carbon will face the losing team at 2:30 p.m. A loss ends the Dinos’ season; a win, and they will play again at 5:00 p.m.
