The Emery Spartans traveled to Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah, to kick off bracket play in the 3A state baseball tournament on Monday, May 11. Fresh off an upset series victory over North Sanpete, the Spartans faced the No. 2-seeded Grantsville Cowboys, falling 11-1 in six innings.
Emery drew first blood in the contest in the top of the third, with senior Beau Stilson scoring from third on a line drive to center field courtesy of Garrett Conover, giving Emery the early 1-0 lead.
However, the Spartans’ lead would be short-lived, as Grantsville exploded for six runs in the frame, retaking the lead 6-1 as the dueling squads entered the fourth inning.
The Cowboys would keep their foot on the gas heading into the remainder of the contest, adding three runs in the bottom of the fourth – including a home run over the left field wall by senior Payton Cummings – and two more in the bottom of the sixth to claim a ten-run, 11-1 advantage, triggering the mercy rule and ending the game.
For the Spartans, Conover led the team on offense with two hits and an RBI. Stilson finished close behind with one run on one hit. On the mound, Conover was charged with the loss, going 2.2 innings with six earned runs and one strikeout.
The loss sends Emery to the one-loss bracket, where they will face off against the Logan Grizzlies at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12.
Live pregame coverage of the contest will begin at 10:45 a.m. on KOAL 107.3 FM & 750 AM, as well as an audio stream available on YouTube at Castle Country Radio – Emery.
