On the afternoon of Tuesday, Dec. 3, a student walking from school was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street at the intersection of 400 North 100 East near Mont Harmon Middle School. Following the incident, emergency services were called to the scene, with first responders transporting the student to the hospital. In addition, the student’s parents were notified and responded immediately.
In a message sent out to parents, Carbon School District Superintendent Mika Salas pleaded with drivers to be more aware, especially in school zones,” Streets near our schools are busy with students twice a day, especially in the afternoon between 2:30 and 3:30. We are asking drivers to pay special attention during this time as students sometimes need to walk several blocks to their destination.” A statement which was echoed by Price City Police Sgt. Kelly Maynes.
Crosswalks have been a point of emphasis for the 2024-2025 school year. In a previous interview with Castle Country Radio, School Resource Officer Frankie Tapia stated,” I would have drivers slow down. I know it’s easy in the summer, you drive by a school and you’re not thinking much about it, but now there are tons of kids out walking and exiting or going to activities outside the school. So I advise people to slow down and pay attention,” adding,” Take that extra minute to get to work and watch out for those kiddos, they don’t always make the best decisions about running across the road; so we’ve got to be ready as far as drivers go.”
