Over the weekend, the Dino boys’ basketball team traveled to the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield for the annual 2A/3A Preview. Welcoming teams from across the classifications, the Dinos played two games in as many days but could not find a win, taking losses against San Juan and Ogden.

The first contest on Friday was against the San Juan Broncos. The Broncos play in Region 15 in the 2A class. San Juan jumped out to take the lead in the first quarter as the Dinos started slowly, and the Broncos closed out the first taking a 15-9 lead. The Dinos would come out in the second and were a little more active finding their offense and putting up 17 points. San Juan added 18 more to take a 33-26 lead as the first half of play ended.

The third quarter went to San Juan as they would explode for 21 points in the quarter they would also hold Carbon to 15 as the Broncos took a 13-point lead to the final eight minutes. Carbon’s offense was on display in the fourth. The Dinos scored 19 and held San Juan to 11, but the Broncos lead held up as they would take the 65-60 win.

Jagger Nieves and Tripp Palmer of the Broncos led all scorers with 16.

Cannon Mortensen scored 16 with three rebounds, and two assists for Carbon. Carter Warburton had 11 with five assists and three boards, and Evan Lancaster had nine collecting four rebounds and two steals.

Moving on to Saturday, Carbon would face the Ogden Tigers out of 3A’s Region 13.

In this contest, Carbon came out strong in the first half and suffered from a lapse in the third quarter as they were handed a 63-44 loss.

The first quarter was the closest as the two teams kept it tight with Ogden scoring 17 and the Dinos putting up 15. In the second, the Tigers started to get some space between themselves and the Dinos holding Carbon to 10 in the quarter and adding 16 of their own to go into the locker room at halftime up 33-25.

In the third Ogden turned on the offense and defense as they seemingly scored at will putting up 23 and allowing the Dinos to score just five going up 56-30. Things slowed a bit in the fourth with the Dinos adding 14 more points, but the Tigers had slowed things down scoring just seven but taking the 63-44 win.

The Tigers’ Jackson Maw led all scorers with 28 in the game.

Mortensen added 13 in the contest with seven boards and a pair of steals for the Dinos. Kyler Orth had 10 with two rebounds an assist and a steal and Warburton had six with two rebounds three assists and one steal in the loss.

The Dinos will be back on the floor on Tuesday when they welcome the Grand County Red Devils to Price for a non-region tilt.

Game time is set at 7:00 p.m..
