One of the most successful seasons in the history of the Emery High School football program is now one of the most decorated as 10 players earned All-State recognition, the Deseret News announced Wednesday afternoon.
Seniors Porter Hurdsman and Kaleb O’Neil were named to the 2A All-State first-team for their standout play on the offensive side of the ball. Fellow senior Ty Yost received an All-State first-team nod for his play in the secondary at safety.
Senior quarterback Treven Gilbert earned a second-team selection in his first year as signal caller. Joining Gilbert on the second team are Hayden Abrams, Braxton Butler, and Jaxon Johnson. Deacon Mangum, Calvin Hadfield, and Josh Howard all earned honorable mentions.
“It is well deserved. I’m thrilled these kids are getting recognized for their work, not just this year, but throughout their careers,” said head coach Jon Faimalo. “It’s just nice to see them get recognized and to see their tremendous work, so I’m just really happy about it.”
Hurdsman emerged as the top receiver on the highest-scoring team in the school’s history. Hauling in 64 catches in 12 games, Hurdsman totaled 1,024 yards and crossed the goal line 15 times. Averaging 85.3 yards per game, he became one of the biggest threats in the classification after the catch.
O’Neil, a three-year starter, became a leader for the team on and off the field. Playing both sides of the ball, O’Neil was a central figure in the Emery offense, protecting Gilbert’s blind side at left tackle. He also served as a key member of the defensive front, playing in all 12 games.
Yost earned his All-State nod at the safety position but could have easily been recognized for playing on offense or special teams. One of the most versatile players in the classification, Yost transitioned from wide receiver to the backfield due to injuries. On the ground, he averaged nearly seven yards per carry as he finished with 495 yards and four touchdowns. Yost also caught 10 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Adding his yardage on punts and kickoffs, Yost wrapped up his senior campaign with 1,168 all-purpose yards, while still acting as an anchor for the athletic secondary.
Gilbert’s All-State second-team selection marks the third consecutive season an Emery quarterback has made the All-State team, following back-to-back honors from Wade Stilson.
“We have been fortunate to have Wade. Everyone thought we would have dropped off with Treven, but he had a phenomenal year,” said Faimalo. “Credit to him for getting ready and driving the team to where he did this year.”
Gilbert completed 61 percent of his passes for a total of 2,847 yards, 34 touchdowns, and only 10 interceptions. He added another four rushing touchdowns.
Abrams provided a spark for the Spartans on both sides of the ball, scoring the season’s first touchdown on defense. At wide receiver, he finished his season campaign with 747 yards, seven touchdowns, and 45 catches.
Butler was a key component for the Spartans on both sides of the ball as well, playing linebacker and wingback. Butler’s All-State selection comes at linebacker, where he finished as one of the leading tacklers on this year’s team.
Johnson’s All-State selection also comes on the defensive side as he played a prominent role in the secondary at safety. A ballhawk on defense, Johnson also finished as the team’s leading rusher, gathering 597 yards and eight touchdowns on 106 carries.
Mangum’s honorable mention comes at wide receiver as he finished third on the team in receiving yards. Playing in all 12 games, Mangum finished with 435 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.
Hadfield and Howard received their honorable mention nods for their play on the offensive line. Hadfield was the team’s right guard and Howard was in the middle at center.
The Deseret News All-State teams are based on coaches’ votes from a list of nominated players from each team.
